I’m on a looooong support call with Dell all over an MS office activation...So let’s do the 3 most like candidates for my next purchase. Marry one, fuck one, kill one. When considering fucking a car, let’s think of it as getting to drive the hell out of it for a day rather than actually fucking it. You can actually fuck it if you want, but I don’t want to see it or hear about it.

Marry the 997 - I’ve driven a 997 S ‘vert, and loved it.
One day with the 2002 - to experience it (my fear is that it’ll be too slow for a long term relationship)
I guess kill the STD - I’m sure it’s a lot of fun, it’s the ridiculous wing and vape bro culture that goes with it that bugs me.

Marry - STI. I love these cars, and would personally prefer a new car with a warranty because I just do.
Drive hard for a day - Porsche C2S. Would be a blast to have for a while, but not quite as practical as the STI, and I would hate to pay for the maintenance and repairs.
Kill - BMW 2002. These don’t do much for me, honestly. Cool little car, sure, but no tears would fall from my eyes if it disappeared.

Marry 911
Fuck 2002
Kill WRX
The 911 will do everything everyday , the 2002 would be a blast to take to some mountain roads and push to the absolute limit.

Marry the Pors che , fuck the 2002, and kill the Subie. I don’t think I could deal with the 2002 for the long run, but it would be a fun short-term ride. The Subaru is way too much boy racer for me.

The 997 search is a difficult one. I’m now over $600 into PPI’s with no car. Each time I drive one I’m like YESILOVETHIS, but recently thoughts are creeping in like, “Is this that much better than my E46 M3? ” or “will this be another E90M3?” What I mean by that second one, is that I really had a hard time having fun with the E90 outside of a track or breaking the law. It was extremely expensive to keep up. Each time it cost me some money or even hinted that it might, I got upset, like really upset. To the point where I was like FUCK this thing, and bought an Audi (something I had never previously considered.)
The 2002 is a car that I hadn’t seriously considered until recently. My wife said something to the effect of, “why don’t you get one of those old BMW’s that you are always pointing out?”
The STi is a guaranteed win for me. I’ve driven dozens of them, and I owned one for six months when I was 19/20. I got a bunch of tickets, hit a deer and traded it on the M3. I always felt like I didn’t get enough time with that car and was too young to be anything but an idiot in it, which I was. That was 12-13 years ago. I’ve said before on here, “If I had to buy a brand new car tomorrow, STi would be it”. The stigma does not bother me as I have owned nearly all of the “fuckhead” cars.

This is more or less my sentiment about the whole thing except I have a super soft spot for the 2002. I just love it/them.

Do your due diligence when searching for a 997, and it’s not that expensive to maintain.

On the 997 v. E46, is the 997 really that much quicker? The 997S seemed to me like it was quick, but not overly so - enough that you can still have fun with it legally (unlike the GT2 RS that someone near me recently bought). The 997 would be very different in character though - so if you need a change, that seems like a good one.
On the 2002, I think 0-60 is in the 9-10 second range on those cars, stock (and I think that’s a tii, too). Sure, slow car fast, blah blah, but I worry that it will get boring quickly - so I’d end up selling it or swapping something dumb into it (S14 FTW!).
I need to drive an STi at some point - I’m compiling a list of cars that I have to experience, and just added that to the list. But I’m a bit too old for that target market, and like my turbos lag-free.

I mostly agree about the 911, but the hangup for me with my E90 was the cost to fun balance. The cost was high and the fun was only at the limit which I couldn’t touch outside of a track. I’ve test driven 4 997's and while I know I would love it I keep thinking, “how will I feel if my 997 decides to cost me 3, 4, or 5 grand?” The answer to that is I will feel like “why the fuck did I do this?” haha.
I don’t know what it is, maybe I’ve spent too much time shopping, maybe I’m having a harder time pulling the trigger now that I have the $ from the sale of the Audi. Maybe I’m getting a little more nervous with each PPI. I dunno but it feels like I’m working too hard at it. All of the best cars that I have owned have been easy to buy.

Haha, I’ve got no beef with a 960 but it’s not in my top 3 either.

No it’s not that much quicker and part of the allure when I drove it was “I feel like I already know this car”, that is how similar it feels to the M3. The steering is the most noticeable difference and it is a lot better in the 911. The 911 is still my #1 choice but I am growing tired of shopping them and worrying about what happens if I get it and then begin to have problems.
I’m not a purist when it comes to the 2002, and I would be looking for a driver, not a garage queen. So something with a neat swap would be right in my wheelhouse and hopefully price range. It would be another keeper like the E46 that I would make pretty over time, but wouldn’t mind buying one that was a little rough around the edges.
I’m not in love with the looks of the Subaru, but they are just so damned easy/impressive to drive. They have no business doing what they do, but they do it. Every time I get to drive one (WRX or STi) I’m like, “Fuck! I forgot how fun these are!”
A couple of things are altering my thinking. First and foremost, the baby. Secondly, since I have been dailying my Ranger I have grown even more appreciation for the M3. It’s a car I own, know, and love. Now I’m forever battling:
Do I stretch my budget and buy a used 911, or do I comfortably buy a new/newish STi or something else fun in the same neighborhood.

Fuck the STI. Don’t want one for long but a day of thra shing could be a hoot.
Kill the BMW. Just not my thing I guess.

Well, if fitting a car seat matters, then that STi really looks good compared to the other two. I mean, it’s technically possible in the 911 (as it is in the E46 - I’ve done it), but it’s a tight squeeze. Especially if your wife wants to come along.

Fitting a car seat is a “nice to have”, but not a priority here as my wife has the practical car and is content to keep it that way. Maybe I just need to stop thinking about it so much! I’m driving a C6 Z06 this weekend as a palate cleanser...

Don’t fret it.
I easily drop that money now and then on my 996, and never regret it. The driving is just so sublime, every single time.
Buy the 997, it’s fantastic.

Just curious: have you considered an early 996?
Get it for 20k, get the early build dates (98/99) with cable throttle, lsd (it’s an option, worth having) and such.
It’s quite an analog car, like the 993 but lighter/more powerful.
And it won’t stretch your budget.

See, I haven’t really had any issues with my E90, it’s in the back of my mind, but it’s not first and foremost on my mind.
It took me two months to find my E90, good examples of uncommon cars are hard to find. It does sound like you are getting a little nervous, but maybe you’ll come across the perfect one some day.

I’ve kicked it around, I’m just not in love with the look of the 996 overall. I’ve seen a few that I have liked with slightly different aero packages, wings etc. Nothing that has turned me on enough to want to bring it home.
